United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

The UNHCR’s primary mission is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees around the world. This committee will take a closer look at the migration and displacement of people within the Latin American region.

The UNHCR has found that organized crime, armed groups, and decades of conflict all pose a serious risk to populations in Latin America, threatening their lives, and causing them to flee their homes. It is estimated that over seven million people are now displaced and asylum applications have sharply increased.

It is the goal of this committee to minimize the adverse effects of violence and conflict that these people experience both in their home countries and while migrating while ensuring that they can exercise their rights to seek asylum in another nation. Delegates will consider the root causes of increased migration, including oppressive governments and crime groups, along with the difficulties migrants are faced with when trying to relocate for their safety in an attempt to find a solution that will best improve their quality of life.
