Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC)

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. The committee concerns itself with questions of international importance regarding the security and demilitarization throughout all countries and regions, along with ensuring that citizens across the globe remain protected. This year, DISEC will be tasked with addressing two critical questions of thematic relevance for the committee. These questions are meant to be discussed to rethink the world in the modern era and how the international community can come together to ensure the sovereignty and self-determination of states. As you consider and discuss these topics, bear in mind the unequivocal necessity for multilateral collaboration and a wide variance of perspectives for effective resolutions to be passed. Topic A requires delegates to consider the role that electoral conflict and interference play in the functioning of democratic institutions, as well as the legislative backbone of every single nation. With the rise of the digital age and cyber-attacks, as well as the deadly conflict which can arise from elections, resolutions will need to provide a comprehensive approach to ensure that citizens can maintain their faith in the institutions which are meant to act as pillars of support and security. Topic B will consider the role of fragile states vis-à-vis topics of disarmament and international security, as well as the extent to which the member countries of the United Nations should involve themselves in the matter. Working to build up fragile states includes not only implementing safeguards against potential domestic violence, but also rethinking the military, economic and legislative institutions which allow these nations to provide their citizens with safety. The expansive nature of these topics will require inventive and unconventional solutions, tackling not only the short-term issues but the long-term strategic risks.
